Assessment of learning
Learning will be assessed through formal summative and formative evaluations.
The students will be assessed at the end of each unit by way of a unit test
that is written individually. They will also be assessed in groups they form
to solve equations as part of their daily activity supporting interaction and
teamwork. At the conclusion of the course they will be assessed through the
state exam in basic algebra that is necessary to complete their GED.
The first assignment is to post a biography in the chat room on the Blackboard
course site. This is done so as to ensure that the students are able to post
appropriately and comfortably. By doing this they will get to know others in
the class and be able to chose partners for the team equation solving assignment
that they are able to work with.
The team equation solving activities are designed to support interactivity;
communication and team work in a small group setting. The students can work
in groups up to 3 people and solve the given equation twice a week. Students
must show all steps to their solutions and process by which they have gotten
to the final answer. The formal solution will be given at the end of the week
and the instructor will review with each team their steps to the solution and
provide the appropriate feedback to them.
End of unit tests will be given at the completion of each unit of study. This
is to test comprehension and understanding of the concepts before moving forward
to the next chapter. Students will do this by way of work/test sheets and are
required to achieve 70% mastery on these unit tests before moving forward to
the next chapter.
The final assessment will be the state basic algebra exam written at the conclusion
of the course. This will be the final assessment in the course combining all
the topics studied in the program. Students will have to achieve a passing grade
of 60% or more to receive their credit in basic algebra.
